A 3-year, single-rod subdermal contraceptive implant for women (Organon)
Pharmacology
Implanon NXT contains etonogestrel, a synthetic progestin released continuously at low doses after subdermal insertion. It provides contraception primarily by inhibiting ovulation, suppressing luteinizing hormone (LH) surge, thickening cervical mucus to prevent sperm penetration, and inducing endometrial changes that reduce the likelihood of implantation. The implant maintains effective plasma levels for up to 3 years.
